Bio

I am a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a Psychoanalyst associated with Columbia University Psychoanalytic Institute. My specialties include treating anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but I also work with patients who have conflict in their everyday lives with personal relationships and work-related stress. In addition, I treat people with obsessive compulsive disorder and eating and sexual disorders, and I provide psychological care to people who are medically ill.

I utilize a highly individualized approach to each patient’s care and take into account their specific circumstances in formulating their treatment plans. My treatment approaches include psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and psychoanalysis. My approach is holistic. I believe that the mind and body are part of a full person and that both need to be taken into consideration in treatment.

As a supervisor, mentor and teacher I have had the opportunity to work with numerous medical students and residents, and have served as a member of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Admissions Committee. Working globally with diverse cultures and individuals has made me sensitive to patients of different cultural backgrounds. I have been fortunate to be recognized by top rating organizations like New York Magazine and Castle Connolly’s Guide to America’s Top Doctors, to be invited to speak to a wide range of audiences about psychological issues, and to have my writings published in major peer-reviewed journals. And I am honored to have been recently elected a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association; this is among the organization's most prestigious awards.
